An orrery demonstrates many of the important aspects of the monthly and annual movements of the Earth and Moon.

Created by Paul Keller (MBE, MA), this orrery is a beautiful working instrument made to the highest specifications. Based on the designs of the eighteenth century scientist and astronomer James Ferguson, this orrery includes all of the planets known at the time of Ferguson’s design and features copies of his original drawings in decorative brass engravings surrounding the base.

This orrery illustrates the constant direction in space of the Earth’s inclined axis of rotation and helps to explain the seasonal variations of sunrise and sunset. The equinoxes and solstices are evident, as is the Sun’s annual path through the signs of the zodiac. The rotation of the moon around the earth is also clearly shown, along with its changing declination during the lunar month. These movements demonstrate the changing phases of the moon and explain the corresponding variations in times and amplitudes. If run electronically, full rotation is achieved in 5 minutes. However, the motor may be disconnected for the orrery to be hand turned to the desired speed, or to position the planets for display or demonstration purposes.

All moving parts, including the planets, decorative balustrades, ornamental figures, engraved dials and zodiac plaques are manufactured from solid brass. The exception is the solid gemstone blue earth globe which is compiled of lapis lazuli for the oceans with a variety of other semi precious stones (such as turquoise or jade) being used for the countries. The base is manufactured from stained American White Oak.

Each orrery is supplied with a signed certificate of authenticity and are all individually numbered.

Please note: As these Orrery's are hand made to order, delivery will be approximately 6 - 8 weeks from the date of your purchase. If you are purchasing from overseas, there may be an additional delay as the appropriate motor for your country's voltage will need to be sourced.
