"This is the M5 globular star cluster in the constellation Serpens. Spanning 165 light years in diameter, M5 is one of the largest globular clusters known. It contains more than 100,000 stars, but according to some estimates, this could be as many as 500,000. M5 is 13 billion years old, more than twice the age of our Solar System, and almost as ancient as the Universe itself. I do most of image processing in PixInsight and finish it in Photoshop. I’ve applied a mild dynamic range compression to the dense core of the cluster in an attempt to retain star colours and their separation. Globular clusters are fascinating objects still hiding secrets of our universe and the formation of galaxies. So far this is the sharpest capture of a globular cluster I have been able to achieve."
