The Shipping Forecast
The first BBC radio weather forecast was one for shipping, transmitted on 14 November 1922. The modern Shipping Forecast, now broadcast on radio 4, began from 1924. The information is transmitted at 00.48hrs, 05.20hrs, 12.01hrs and 17.54hrs. All editions include gale warnings, a general synopsis and reports from the 31 sea areas around the British Isles, though Trafalgar (off Portugal) is only included in the first broadcast unless there is a gale warning there. The list starts with Viking, off the Norwegian coast and works clockwise round to South-East Iceland.
