Arctic Dragon © Carina Letelier Baeza
Astronomy Photographer of the Year is an annual competition featuring the world’s greatest space photography. Photographers from across the globe compete to take home the prestigious title.
"This aurora panorama that looks like a big dragon over those rock pyramids, was the result of a geomagnetic storm level G2 during the night of February 25th 2023, generated by a coronal mass ejection sooner that day. The result was intense red-grenish auroras during the whole night. And the location of the photo is the Arctic Henge, located in Raufarhöfn, Iceland, as it has a rich cultural meaning for Icelanders, and also that night only the north east side of Iceland had clear night skies.
The technique used was a panorama, made with 11 frames, using PTGui Pro to merge them, after that, in Photoshop, StarXterminator was used to separate stars and process the night sky with auroras, after that camera raw was used for developing the colors, brightness, contrasts and colour corrections, to finally add again the stars and re-frame in a 5:4 proportion image."
