Quarter Sized Vernier Sextant
The sextant is a quarter size replica of a Captain Campbell Vernier sextant. It has a telescope and four filters of varying intensity, all parts are fully functional but they are not intended for serious use.
John Campbell was a Royal Navy Captain and he developed this instrument from its predecessor, the Octant, in 1757. His invention was close in time to that of accurate, portable chronometers and it was the combination of the two which made navigation a science rather than guesswork thus saving countless lives at sea.
The sextant itself is made of solid brass with a wooden handle and the presentation box is made from a sustainable hard wood with brass inlay.
The box measures 12 x 11 x 7 cm and the sextant measures 10 x 9 x 6 cm.+ Read more - Show less
