The largest astrophotography competition in the world, Astronomy Photographer of the Year showcases the very best space photography from a global community of photographers.

As part of the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage, a temporary thought-provoking artwork, Speedwell, was set up at Plymouth Harbour, created by local artist collective Still/Moving. The giant installation contained thousands of LED lights that showed multiple illuminations of three words that ultimately spelt out NO NEW WORLDS. The idea was to make people stop and reflect about the legacy and impact of the Mayflower voyage on the Americas. Situated above the artwork during the month of September, the Milky Way could have been seen in 1620 at night from the harbour. However I had to be 20 miles away to photograph it because of light pollution. The light from the star Polaris that I used to calibrate my mount was made in the lifetime of those on the voyage as it is just over 400 light years away.
