Shepherd 24 Hour Wall Clock
A beautiful, small scale replica of our world famous Shepherd Clock available to buy from the Royal Observatory, Greenwich.
The original slave dial is located at the gates of the Royal Observatory and Meridian Line, Greenwich and is famous the world over. The first clock ever to show Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) directly to the public, the Shepherd master clock was the heart of Britain's time system. Its time was promptly sent by telegraph wires to London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dublin, Belfast and many other cities and by 1866, time signals were sent to Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts via the new transatlantic submarine cable.
In terms of the distribution of accurate time into everyday life, it is one of the most important clocks ever made!
The minute and seconds hands are conventional but the hour hand goes round the dial once in twenty-four hours. Thus, at midday the minute hand points to the top, but the hour hand points to the bottom.
45cm diameter. Requires x1 AA batteries (not included).
