In the dark, this image becomes exponentially harder to achieve, as the Milky Way core must be in the right location on one of the few low-tide evenings with favourable conditions.

Luckily, these elements lined up for me, although the photograph almost didn’t happen due to some initially off-putting winds. At 1 a.m. I went out onto the reef to try and shoot this image. Within an hour, the tide had come in enough for me to have to rush off the reef in a panic – thankfully with the shots I needed.

Exclusive to Royal Museums Greenwich

Unframed
