Emma Hamilton: Seduction And Celebrity
Accompanying our major exhibition at the National Maritime Museum (November 2016 – April 2017) this book provides a fresh evaluation of Emma Hamilton’s artistic undertakings, cultural achievements and legacy.
From humble origins, Emma Hamilton (1765–1815) rose to national and international fame as a model, performer and trendsetter. However, as mistress of Horatio Nelson and muse to painters such as George Romney, she is often interpreted as playing a passive role. This landmark publication recovers Emma from myth and misrepresentation, and reveals her as an active and influential historical actor in her own right.
Dr. Quintin Colville is the curator of naval history at the National Maritime Museum in London. Kate Williams is Professor of History at the University of Reading.
