The concept of the Grand Tour began in 1964, when the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) noted that an alignment of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune that would occur in the late 1970s would enable a single spacecraft to visit all of the outer planets by using gravity assists. This would allow a complete survey of the outer planets in less time and for less money than sending individual probes to each planet.
NASA's Voyager mission took advantage of this once-every-175-year alignment of the outer planets for a grand tour of the solar system. The twin spacecraft revealed details about these planets which were previously unknown and Voyager set the stage for such ambitious orbiter missions as Galileo to Jupiter and Cassini to Saturn.
In 2018 a creative team of visual strategists at JPL, known as "The Studio," created a futuristic space travel poster series. Nine artists, designers, and illustrators were involved in designing the 14 posters, which are the result of many brainstorming sessions with JPL scientists, engineers, and expert communicators.+ Read more - Show less
