Royal Observatory Medallion
This attractive gold coloured medallion is double-sided and depicts views of Royal Observatory, Greenwich, the home of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
One side is etched with an image of Obsevatory buildings, including Flamsteed House, designed by Sir Christopher Wren and historic home to Britain's Astronomers Royal. King Charles II instructed Wren, who was also an astronomer, to design the building in 1675. On top of it's roof is the Time Ball; one of the world’s earliest public time signals, the bright red Time Ball, which has been in operation since 1833.
The other side shows the Meridian Observatory building, with the roof open and the 'Transit Circle' telescope observing the sky above. Also shown is the world-famous Meridian Line, where east meets west at Longitude 0°. The line in Greenwich represents the historic Prime Meridian of the World.
