Stars & Nebulae category 2024 - highly commended

Astronomy Photographer of the Year is an annual competition featuring the world’s greatest space photography. Photographers from across the globe compete to take home the prestigious title.

"The image shows the dust and gas formations around star Antares. As this part of the sky is barely visible from Hungary, I have travelled to Namibia as part of an astrophotography expedition team to capture this image. To achieve this huge field of view, I have used a telephoto lens instead of a long focal length telescope. Even at 135mm I needed to create a 5 panel mosaic (3 panels RGB and 2 panels of Ha) to be able to show this huge region in one picture. As the lens has some color fringing, I have used a monochromatic camera instead of a DSLR, where I can focus for R/G/B colors separately, minimizing the aberration, and to increase the resolution of the image." Our Custom Prints and frames are all handmade to the highest standards. As each Custom Print and frame is made to your required specification, they take a little longer to prepare. Custom Prints are printed on sustainable, matt 250gsm conservation digital paper. Unframed prints are carefully rolled with acid free tissue paper inside a sturdy cardboard tube. Frames are made in the UK from sustainably- sourced woods.

Custom Prints (those which are customised by choosing a size and frame) are made to order and therefore take a little longer than our standard fulfilment times. Please read our Delivery and Returns page for our latest information about UK and international shipping. Custom Prints cannot be sent via our FedEx delivery service option.

Please check the size and frame options carefully so that you are happy as once ordered we will be unable to change. Every purchase supports the work of Royal Museums Greenwich.
