Our Moon - highly commended
Always a great opportunity to breathe colour into our slate grey companion, a Lunar eclipse is an event you should never miss. The photographer here has expertly captured the moment the Earth's shadow begins to leave the Lunar disc exposing it's bright glowing underbelly. - Steve Marsh, competition judge
One of my most memorable moments under the stars has been the incredible lunar eclipse from November, 2021! The feeling of staying up all night under the stars watching the Moon turn red is filled with emotion and importance to me. This is my most detailed image of the eclipse yet, I captured it with my huge Celestron CPC1100 telescope! I captured high speed video of the Moon with my planetary camera to reduce noise and to stack the best frames least affected by the atmosphere, I also had to create a mosaic just to fit the full disk in my final image. This image shows the fantastic red colour created by light passing through all the Earth’s sunrises and sunsets casting light on the Moon: a blood red! I processed this one to show off the beautiful natural colour from that night, without over processing the Moon and creating something unnatural. I love the memories associated with the eclipse captured in this image, it always reminds me how incredible these rare events truly are! - Noah Kujawski
