"Carreg Samson is a chambered burial tomb, or Cromlech, created by Neolithic Man around 5,500 years ago. It stands on isolated farmland overlooking the sea, in West Wales, UK.
The forecast for the night of 10th-11th May 2024 was good, with clear skies. It was my intention to photograph this iconic monument under a clear night sky, with our constellation behind. Arriving shortly after 11.00pm it was obvious to me that the sky would be far from clear, as the Aurora Borealis was becoming visible and was obliterating all but the brightest stars. I spent the next 3 hours around this iconic monument, trying to show it underneath a phenomenon that our ancestors would undoubtedly have witnessed. Would they have feared the colours or been in awe of them, as I was? During an exposure of 10 seconds I painted the stones with light from my head torch." Chris Bestall.
