Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year is the largest international competition of its kind. Organised by the Royal Observatory Greenwich and sponsored by Insight Investment, the competition receives entries from photographers all around the world. It annually showcases the best space photography from a global community of astrophotographers.

I originally shot this image purely for the reflection of the Milky Way over a large coastal pool of water, but after I had finished the panorama I decided to try getting some shots of myself in the water too. Fortunately, the water was shallow enough for me to walk out in front of it but it took me many attempts to get it to work right with composition, focus and exposure. It’s much easier to figure those out when behind the camera rather than in front of it! The reflection posed a bit of an issue because the breeze kept varying through the panorama causing the reflection to be inconsistent in quality. It would have been far easier if I had shot it using an ultra-wide-angle lens instead of a panorama, but it still came out really well.
