Painting the Sky (Custom Print)
Astronomy Photographer of the Year is the largest international competition of its kind. Organised by the Royal Observatory Greenwich and sponsored by Insight Investment, the competition receives entries from photographers all around the world. It annually showcases the best space photography from a global community of astrophotographers.
I was searching for clear skies in Finnish Lapland to capture the beauty of a polar night. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw what was waiting behind the clouds. Polar stratospheric clouds are something I have been searching for for many years and had seen only in photographs until that day. I took my camera onto a frozen river to get a good view and started to take photos. It took a while to find the right settings as I had no experience with photographing this. The clouds slowly changed their shape and colours. It was like watching someone painting, especially when the Sun was lower – it started to get a darker orange and the pink shades became stronger. I was totally mesmerized by these clouds and I could have watched them endlessly. Thomas Kast
