Using highly accurate topographical data of the Moon's surface from NASA to map the textures of the Moon, multi-disciplinary British artist Luke Jerram has designed this exquisite Limited-Edition Mini Mirror Moon Sculpture. Each piece is one of a limited edition of 20 pieces, that are hand signed and numbered by the artist.

Inspired by the surface of the Moon, this reflective contemporary lunar ornament sits elegantly on its own stand, creating a striking three-dimensional focal point for shelves, desks, bedside tables or display cabinets. Its mirrored steel surface subtly interacts with natural and ambient light throughout the day, casting gentle reflections that change with your surroundings, evoking the shifting glow of moonlight within your living space.

With this modern lunar design, Jerram has created an exclusive miniature version of his work Mirror Moon, an artistic interpretation of our celestial neighbour, that will soon be on display at the Royal Observatory Greenwich. This is a mini version of the art installation, for you to own and display in your own home, designed to add depth, light and quiet wonder to modern interiors.

Since the Royal Observatory’s founding in 1675, numerous generations of astronomers have observed, mapped and photographed our closest celestial neighbour from Greenwich, seeking to understand the Solar System and our place in it.

Celebrate 350 years of the Royal Observatory, with an attractive and exclusive mini Mirror Moon Sculpture on Stand inspired by the larger artwork by British artist Luke Jerram best known for his large-scale public engagement artworks. For more than 20 years, he has enchanted audiences around the world with his celestial installations.

Mirror Moon by multi-disciplinary British artist Luke Jerram will go on display at the Royal Observatory Greenwich in May 2026. The new Mirror Moon artwork draws on Jerram's expertise in combining arts, science and engineering to bring people closer to our closest celestial neighbour. There's a full interview with Jerram about Mirror Moon here.

Acting as a ‘cultural mirror’ to society, the moon has always inspired humanity, reflecting the ideas and beliefs of people around the world. It is a unifying symbol for humanity and has inspired artists, poets, writers and musicians throughout history. Every culture has looked to the Moon, developing their own understandings about its importance and influence on the world below. Mirror Moon reflects Jerram’s interest in this history.

Luke Jerram said, ‘For more than two decades, the Royal Observatory Greenwich has been inspiration for my work as an artist and so it’s an absolute privilege to be commissioned to create this new sculpture for the Museum and to be part of its story. I hope Mirror Moon will inspire generations of visitors to have an interest in contemporary science, art and the wonder of the night’s sky.’

Here, Jerram shares the process of creating the artwork, the varied symbolism of the Moon – and why tactile art is so important.

Made of stainless steel and measuring 20cm in diameter, this piece uses highly accurate topographical data of the Moon's surface from NASA to map the textures of the Moon onto the mirrored steel surface. It utilises imagery and data specifically from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mission. The tactile steel medium allows you to run your fingers across the craters, valleys, mountains and smooth lava fields, that we can see from Earth and the heavily cratered surface of the unseen ‘far side’ of the Moon.

This limited-edition Mini Moon sculpture blends science-inspired design with modern home décor, making it an ideal decorative object for space lovers, astronomy enthusiasts, interior designers, or anyone looking to introduce a unique celestial touch into their environment.
