This Pirates exhibition mug features a pirate ship illustration, and the famous quote "We must go on, because we can't turn back". 

The words are said by Captain Alexander Smollett, the skilled and courageous captain of the schooner Hispaniola in the novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. The ship  illustration takes it's inspiration from the one shown on the treasure map from the book, which is featured in the exhibition.

The popular appeal of pirates in Britain can be traced to the late nineteenth century. In particular, the novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson helped to create an enduring image of pirates that has inspired countless others. 

The novel follows the adventures of a young boy, Jim Hawkins, and his quest to find buried treasure. Through Stevenson’s story we encounter cutthroat pirates, a secret treasure map and a talking parrot. 

Treasure Island is not a cosy tale of loveable pirates; Jim is exposed to the dangerous, adult world of piracy from the start. He witnesses a murder and is forced to shoot a man dead to save himself.

To keep the product looking at its best we would recommend hand washing as soon as possible after use and avoiding abrasive products, however the majority of us use dishwashers. 

As long as your ceramics are not decorated with precious metals, it is perfectly acceptable for them to go into the dishwasher but over time with lots of usage the colour and glaze may dull slightly. 

To prolong the look of the product we would always recommend using a gentle low temperature wash cycle with a mild liquid / gel detergent, not powder or tablets.
