Cutty Sark 1869 Brass Compass

£18.00

A tribute to the world-famous clipper Cutty Sark, this antique-finish brass compass has an engraving of the globe on the underside, centring particularly on Australia, a destination for Cutty Sark on many occasions to bring wool and other cargo back to England.

Cutty Sark was built in Dumbarton in 1869. Cutty Sark’s first voyage departed London on 15 February 1870, bound for Shanghai. On this outward voyage, the ship carried a general cargo, including wine, spirits and beer, and manufactured goods.

As Cutty Sark moved into its teenage years, it was the most successful period as a cargo ship. Transporting wool from Australia saw it sail faster than every ship at the time by 25 days to a month.

In December 1883, Cutty Sark broke the record for the fastest passage back to London from Australia. She was to break her own record on several occasions subsequently.

Packaging

The item was as expected but the actual box was a little 'understated' for the item really especially as it was for a 21st birthday present it also came in a huge outer box with lots of brown paper in it,it would have been so much nicer in a 'Greenwich style box' in fact we went and bought a much nicer presentation box for it.

Dear Claire

We are pleased that you are happy with the compass itself. Thanks for your feedback about the presentation box, we will look at what we can do with our supplier to improve this. We have noted your comment about the delivery packaging also. Regards, ECommerce Team
