Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year is the largest international competition of its kind. Organised by the Royal Observatory Greenwich and sponsored by Insight Investment, the competition receives entries from photographers all around the world. It annually showcases the best space photography from a global community of astrophotographers. Years ago, before overfishing, Little Redfish Lake was named after the vast numbers of salmon which appeared to turn the lake a red colour. The colouration is no longer caused by the salmon, but sunsets and airglow during the night still turn the waters a vibrant red. It is these beautiful warm echoes of red, combined with the mirror-like reflections of the Sawtooth Mountains in the distance and the alignment of the Milky Way that make Little Redfish Lake one of the most spectacular places I have ever photographed at night. We were fortunate enough that night to have the shore to ourselves – just three of us and a rather excited dog who tried his best not to run into our tripods! We spent the sunset here, waiting for the stars to come out and the Milky Way core to rise, marvelling at the red colour of the water due to the setting sun. Bryony Richards
