The Cutty Sark Pocket Manual tells the story of how this legendary ship was commissioned, its design and building, life on board and some of her notable journeys.

Cutty Sark was constructed on the Clyde in 1869 for the Jock Willis Shipping Line and was one of the last tea clippers to be built. It was one of the fastest tea clippers ever built spending just a few years on the tea routes before the Suez Canal opened. Once the canal opened, coupled with the increasing use of steamships made clippers unprofitable on shorter routes. Cutty Sark was then turned to the trade in wool from Australia, where for ten years she held the record time for a journey to Britain. As steamships began to dominate this route as well, Cutty Sark found itself becoming first a cargo ship and then a training and cadet ship. She was then transferred to permanent dry dock at Greenwich in London for public display.
