NGC 6164 and NGC 6165: The Dragon's Egg © Charles Pevsner

"So-called because NGC 6188, the Fighting Dragons of Ara, lie to the northwest, this arresting nebular structure glows from the intense radiation emitted by an extremely hot and extremely luminous triple-star system (the brightest of which, HD148937, is at the center of the image).

I was originally attracted to this target because of striking bipolar symmetry of the magenta lobes (NGC 6164/5), but my favorite part of the image turned out to be the delicate, wispy outer shell.

This beautiful nebula has not been around long and it was formed along with its central star about 3 or 4 million years ago. And it won't be around much longer either.  HD148937 is about 40 times the mass of our Sun, and, like all massive stars, lives a short and furious life. In 4 million years, it will burn through its atomic fuel and end its life in a supernova explosion." Charles Pevsner
